Comments: Ken Hill lists this obverse as Variety III during his Gobrecht Journal analysis of the 1856 Large Date obverse dies. Of the four 1856 Large Date obverses, Obverse 3 is clearly the most challenging to locate in higher grades of EF or better. I had not seen a Mint State example of this variety until one appeared in May 2004 on the Heritage website. That coin was graded MS62 by NGC.
