Scarcity: 1865-S dimes are difficult to locate in the lower circulated grades and become very scarce in EF-AU. A very
rare date in Mint State.

Comments: 1865-S dimes are typically seen with flat heads and a weak mintmark. This observation can be explained by the higher
availability of Variety 101. Locating an example of Variety 101 with a full head could take many years. I would consider a
full head Variety 101 as being an R6 rarity. Variety 103 can be found with better head details. Collectors should pay special
attention while attempting to locate an example of Variety 104 or Variety 105. Variety 103 can be easily confused with either
Varieties 104 or 105 since the obverse dies have high dates. Close inspection of the date position will be necessary as the date
slopes upward slightly on Varieties 104 and 105 while the date is level on Variety 103. Finally, it should be noted that the
San Francisco mint employed a leftover reverse from 1861 and 1862 to strike a portion of its 1865 coinage. See Variety 102.
