Variety Vs. Denticle Ruler Cross Reference Table Scarcity: A tougher "common" date to locate. The Type I reverse variety is very scarce in all grades and should command a premium. Nice higher grade 1878 dimes are currently underrated when valued at common date pricing. Comments: The rarity of specimens in later die states appears to be result of limited usage of the dies. To date, 13 obverse have been identified. That amount, compared with a historical mintage of 1,678,000, produces an average mintage per obverse die of 139,000 pieces. This figure is on the lower side of expectations for an average mintage benchmark of 250,000 examples per die. Usage of Type I reverse dies was very limited, given the scarcity of surviving examples and the significant difficult in locating examples above EF. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
