Comments: Reverse die doubling was undoubtedly not a primary concern by mint workers during the hubbing
of the 1889 reverse dies. As a result, at least five reverse dies have been identified with Class 1
rotated hub doubling. Rotated hub doubling can occur during the second hubbing of a working die. The
die being rehubbed is rotated about the center to an alternate position from its initial hubbing. The amount
of die doubling will be a function of the amount of rotation. The image made in the second hubbing is
typically stronger than the one from the first hubbing. Since the point of rotation is near the center of
the die, the amount of doubling will increase as you move towards the rim of the die. For the five 1889
doubled reverse dies, doubling is at it greatest near the outer edge of the wreath leaves.

Surprisingly, the 1889 obverse dies are mostly free from date repunching and misplaced dates. Variety 103
presents an opportunity to own two date punch preparation artifacts on the same coin. John McCloskey
discovered the simultaneous existence of a repunched and misplaced date variety and published the finding
in the Gobrecht Journal in 1992. This variety is considered very rare.
