Reverse C: S Over Low S, Medium S, [mm C,H,TR4]

Obverse 2.2                                             Reverse C

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)                 Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Reverse C exhibits a final Medium S mintmark punched above another Medium S mintmark. The lower serif of the first punch can be clearly seen below the final mintmark.

Obverse 2 has been polished rendering the letters in the legend and date digits shallow within the die's surface. The 9 digit in the date is open after the die polishing. The top loop of (S)TATES has been nearly removed. This is the only 1890 San Francisco die pairing seen with the S over Low S mintmark reverse.

Few AU and Mint State examples of this variety are known and locating a specimen for entry into a Top 100 Varieties set will prove to be challenging.
