Variety 103a
Obverse 3: Small Date, 7 Points Between Two Denticles
Reverse C: Die Alignment Left 5 Degrees

Obverse 3 Reverse C
Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The date punch on Obverse 3 is slightly larger than Obverse 2, probably due to a stronger placement within the die. The date punch is also higher than Obverse 2, with the 7 digit pointing between two denticles.
Reverse C exhibits two minor diagnostics. The first is a small dot between UNITE(D) and the wreath. The second is another small dot shaped defect below the upper right serif of O(F). These two die defects will remain visible during the Variety 103a die state.
Originally it was assumed that an early die pairing of Obverse 3 and Reverse C, without the horizontal die crack through UNIT(E)D and into ONE DIME, would also be found with a rotated reverse left at 23 degrees. On the plate coin, the reverse is rotated left by approximately 5 degrees and leads to new questions about obverse and reverse die alignment during Obverse 3 die pairings. We have evidence that Variety 103 shows 5 deg left rotation, Variety 103a shows 23 degree left rotation and Variety 104 exhibits reverse die rotation right by 5 degrees. For Variety 104, I do plan to recheck the reverse rotation shortly to confirm and potential update the complete 1837 chapter with additional observations during November 2010 timeframe. This date chapter and corresponding images are due for upgrades.
