Comments: Kam Ahwash lists A-1 and A-2 examples for 1840 No Drapery obverse dies. After close inspection of examples A-1 and A-2, it was determined that both varieties were struck from the same obverse die. A-1 is now listed as Variety 102 with a bold date and obverse. Variety 102a results from the lapping of Obverse 2 and the removal of rock and date depth. The die lapping increases the distance between date and base, rendering the distance larger on Variety 102a. The key diagnostic that is common to A-1 and A-2 varieties is a group of radial lathe die lines to the right of LIBERTY in the scroll.
