Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The identification of individual obverse dies for 1853 hubbed arrows and date relies mainly on locating die creation or wear artifacts. Die cracks and die scratches are the two predominant diagnostic types that will be highlighted throughout this section. On Obverse 1, there is a die crack from the rim to the left base, then down through the left arrow and to the 1 digit in the date. Additional die cracks throughout the obverse are mapped in detail above. There is a large die defect on Liberty's right arm.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, PCGS MS63 CAC
