Comments: For some unknown reason, this variety has proven to be very elusive even though Ahwash lists this variety in his encyclopedia. The Obverse 4 plate coin exhibits a low date that slopes upward. This date position is nearly identical to that of the New Orleans Obverse 1 die. Ahwash indicates that the date position on Obverse 4 is medium with no slope. Though the obverse and reverse plate coin photographs appear to be from the same coin, not being able to find an example of this variety leads one to question whether the Ahwash Obverse 4 plate coin photograph is from an 1859-O dime instead of an 1859 dime.
