Comments: Obverse 1 is initially paired with a late die state reverse die that has been previously paired with two Closed 3 obverse dies (See 1873 Closed 3 Reverse F). During the pairings with Closed 3 Obverse 6 and Obverse 7, this reverse die develops a progressive set of die cracks that form a radial ring on the outer portion of the wreath. Once paired with Open 3 Obverse 1, the reverse die exhibits late die state cracks. There is the appearance that the die is prepared to break apart at 3:30 with the potential for an internal cud. To date, there have been no discoveries of an 1873 Open 3 dime with a reverse cud.
