Comments: The reappearance of arrows at the date in 1873 coincides with the omnibus Mint Act of February 12, 1873.
This act attempted to introduce the metric system for United States coinage weights. Much has been written about
the lack of merit of this act given that the new metric weight of 38.58 +/- 1.5 grains (2.5 +/- 0.097 grams) for
dimes completely overlapped the prior weight requirement of 38.4 +/- 0.5 grains. The re-introduction of arrows
for coinage of 1873 and 1874 has created a desirable two year type coin.

Many examples of 1873 With Arrows dimes are found with either a soft striking of Liberty's head and/or weakness
in the center reverse denomination. No hubbing of the arrows and date in the master die has been detected, unlike
a portion of the 1853 With Arrows dies and all of the 1854 and 1855 dies. To date, 23 obverse dies have been
identified for 1873 With Arrows dimes. 23 obverse dies appears to be an excessive amount considering the reported
mintage of 2,378,500 pieces. The author has rarely seen 1873 With Arrows dimes in late die states. The lack of late
die state examples and the low average mintage of 100,000 pieces per die suggests a minimal usage of each set of obverse
and reverse dies after the delivery of Closed and Open 3 1873 dimes in January and February.
