Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: All the examples of this variety seen to date have had a very weak strike on Liberty's head. The left arrow is obviously repunched. The 1 digit in the date appears to have been obliquely punched into the obverse die. The flag of the 1 digit is considerably thicker than the base.

There are two 1873 With Arrows obverse dies with a repunched left arrow. They are Variety 109 and Variety 118. On both obverse dies, the date and arrows placement is very similar. The repunching is also found on the bottom of the left arrow on both obverse dies. This further complicates the proper attribution of each variety. Carefully examine the position of the left arrow with respect to the flag of the 1 digit on both dies. On this variety (Variety 109), the arrow is punched lower than on Variety 118.
