Comments: 1882 dimes are often seen with flat heads and weak reverse denominations. The strike weakness may be a function of the hubbing quality of the working dies employed for the variety being studied. 1882 varieties have been seen with both strong and weak reverses with Variety 107 clearly showing evidence of reverse die polishing. Additionally, there has been collector interest in the "broken top 2" found on many 1882 dimes. After close study of the 1882 obverse varieties at my disposal, several conclusions have been drawn. First, the date punch for 1882 dimes displays a defect within the upper loop of the 2 digit and to the right of the upper ball. The transfer of the defect, as placed into the die via punch, is a function of the strength or depth of the date impression into the obverse die. Secondly, I believe that all 1882 obverse dies were created from the same date punch. The occurrence of normal vs. broken top 2 varieties results from the chipping of the top of the 2 digit in the date punch during the creation of the 1882 obverse dies.
