Variety Vs. Denticle Ruler Cross Reference Table Open Bud Reverse Die and Mintmark Position Comparison Guide Scarcity: 1841-O Open Bud dimes are common in grades G through VF. Locating nice, problem free EF or better examples is challenging. The Small O is slightly more common than the Medium O. On the other hand, 1841-O Closed Bud dimes (Varieties 101 and 102) are very rare but occasionally available due to publicity and extensive cherry picking. Both the Large O Closed Bud (Variety 101) and the Small O Closed Bud (Variety 102) are considered an R5 in any grade and bring substantial premiums due to their rarity and transitional nature. Comments: The ratio of documented Small O Open Bud versus Medium O Open Bud dies does not correlate with availability of each mintmark size. The ratio of 9:2 Small to Medium O dies would suggest that four Small O Open Bud dimes would be seen for every Medium O Open Bud dime. Experience and the Greer rarity ratings do not support this suggestion with Small O Open Bud and Medium examples being fairly matched in availability. There is also an open question as to whether the stated mintage for 1841-O dimes is accurate. Variety 105 with a shattered reverse from use in 1842, and Variety 116 with a reverse die previously known from limited 1842 coinage suggest that 1841 New Orleans dimes could have been struck in 1842 and included in the 1842-O mintage report.
