Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The newly discovered 1853 Hubbed Arrows and Date Variety 118 was first identified by Mike Mucedola and confirmed by the author during October 2019. The high grade specimen provides access to well defined obverse die cracks at the date punch, across Liberty's upper body and neck, along with more cracking at Stars 1 through 3. The die crack from Star 8 through the cap and into Star 9 is bold and obvious. The obverse die is also clashed during this late die state.

Reverse R is eroded and heavily clashed though the plate coin is very well struck.

What is surprising is that the die variety remained unidentified for nearly two decades while extensive research of of 1853 With Arrows dies was being conducted. The obverse die cracks are well defined and easily seen as not matching any of the previously defined Hubbed Arrows and Date die varieties.
