Comments: Reverse C features a Small O mintmark style that was previously used in 1839. The mintmark measures 0.9mm versus the 0.8mm height for the remainder of 1840 Small O mintmarks. Reverse C is in a later die state with extensive die cracks to the rim. Numerous die cracks are present from rim to (U)N(I)TED, (S)TATES (O)F A(M)ER(I)CA. Given the late die state of this reverse die, one might expect to find earlier die state examples from 1839 since this die pair variety is rare for 1840 New Orleans coinage. An inspection of 1839 Reverse A or B dies revealed no matching diagnostics with this 1840 reverse. We have more questions than answers concerning this 1840 New Orleans variety

During November 2006, a Variety 103 specimen appeared with two reverse cuds. See the F-103a listing.
