1840-O

Variety 107

Obverse 3.2: Lapped Die, Weak Date and Base

Reverse D.2: Small O, Rim Die Crack UNI(T)ED

Obverse 3.2                                            Reverse D.2

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)                  Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: During the die pairing between Obverse 3 and Reverse D, the Obverse 3 die has been severely polished or lapped. On the AU58 plate coin, one can see that little if any date and lower base detail is left on the obverse die. Reverse D appears to be in the same die state as found during the pairing with Obverse 2.

In early 1841, the New Orleans mint will reuse Reverse D to create the very rare Small O Closed Bud Reverse transitional variety.

Plate Coin: Kevin Zeitler Collection, NGC AU58
