Scarcity: A date that is common in the lower circulated grades, but it becomes more difficult in EF or better. In Mint
State, this date is very scarce and will prove to be difficult to locate.

Comments: In general, finding well struck 1849 dimes will be challenging. Variety 104, with a repunched 89 (1849/8 Overdate),
is the most significant variety for the date. However the late die state of the 1848 Reverse B, when paired with Obverse 2,
should be considered as very collectable given its estimated scarcity. The reported 1849 mintage is consistent with the
number of documented dies and their die states. I have never seen examples of the repunched 49 or repunched 9 obverses listed
by Breen. The raised metal area between and behind the 4 and 9 digits, on Obverse 2, may have been viewed as repunching and
therefore listed as a repunched 49.
