Comments: Reverse C (1848 Reverse B) is paired with an incremental 1849 obverse die.

Obverse 4 typically produces sharply struck examples. The primary diagnostic for Obverse 4 is the date position. A close inspection of the date digits shows that there are residual date punch artifacts behind the 4 and 9 digits. Depending on the light angle for illumination, these artifacts could have been seen in the past as repunching on the 49 digits or on the 9 digit. Based on the extensive variety analysis presented in this web-book, I consider this variety to have a heavy date with punch artifacts only.
