Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Obverse 1 is easily recognized by a thin date with the 1 and 8 digits being especially weak. All digits are shallow in relief and are separated as compared to the remainder of 1849 obverse dies. During this early die state, Obverse 1 will be seen with faint die polish lines from the chin into the left shoulder. This observation was not listed during the 2004 release of the web-book and was reinforced in April 2015 by David McCathy at Kagin's. He was kind enough to supply images from an NGC MS64 example that well illustrated the extra obverse die polished lines.

During this die state, Reverse A is perfect with no die cracks.
