Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: All 1854 dimes will be found with a die defect or gouge directly below shield lines 3 and 4. This die gouge appears to have been placed on the master hub die and transferred to all 1854 and 1854-O obverse working dies.

Obverse 1 die has a weak date with the 54 digits being apart or not touching. This weak date is designated as an Open 54. In contrast, other 1854 obverse dies are found with strong dates where the 54 digits touch. These will be designated as a Closed 54.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, AU50
