Variety Vs. Denticle Ruler Cross Reference Table Reverse Die and Mintmark Position Comparison Guide Scarcity: A better date in the Seated Dime series and challenging to locate in grades of EF or higher. The Large O has historically been more available than the Medium O, which is rare in EF or better. However a significant number of Medium O dimes have surfaced recently. Variety 103, Date Repunched Up, is very common in low grades and accounts for a significant portion of Large O Mint State examples seen to date. Comments: Locating well struck examples of 1856 New Orleans dimes will be difficult. Obverse dies 3 and 4 are rusted and produced weak strikes. Reverse A and Reverse D, with a Large O, have been lapped and are seen with a progressively weakened wreath and legend. Varieties 104 and 107 are the better possibilities for locating examples with strong strikes. Seated dime working die preparation appeared to be problematic for the Philadelphia mint in 1856. Three of the six obverse dies have significant repunching of the date. Date position and slope variability are considerable and consistent with the Philadelphia obverses dies, though no New Orleans obverse dies have been seen with die doubling.
