Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The date position is dramatically different than the rest of the 1857 obverse dies. The date is positioned low and has a sharp upward slope. Al Blythe, in the March 1987 issue of the Gobrecht Journal, suggested that the date digits on this obverse die were repunched. An earlier die state example may show signs of repunching on the 8 and 5 digits. There are no die chips around the stars. Often comes weakly struck, in particular Stars 9 through 13.
