Reverse Die and Mintmark Position Comparison Guide

Scarcity: In Wreath dimes are common in the circulated grades, however locating Mint State examples will be
challenging. This San Francisco date has a very low Mint State population in MS64 or better, and is very
underrated at common date pricing levels. As a mintmark placement variety, it is more difficult to locate
than the Below Wreath variety.

Comments: Cracked dies and uneven strikes are the rule for 1875-S In Wreath dimes. The San Francisco mint's
transition from low volume production demands in 1873 and 1874 to the high volume output during 1875 appears
to have been plagued with quality issues. Both In Wreath and Below Wreath dimes of that year are found with
flatness at the head, rock and foot areas. In Weath dimes were only struck with two obverse dies leading to
over usage and degradation. Finding early die state examples that are fully struck will be very
challenging, especially for Varieties 105 and 106 as Obverse 2 was excessively over used. If they can be located,
fully struck and choice examples should bring a strong premium above trend guides. The In Wreath mintmark position
variety is scarce in Mint State and is under valued when offered at the same trend pricing as the Below Wreath variety.
