Variety 103c

Obverse 3.2: High Date, Downward Slope

Reverse C.4: Shattered Die with Cud at 1:00-2:30

Obverse 3.2                                           Reverse C.4

Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Reverse C is found in a terminal die state with emerging die cud from 1:00 to 2:30. The large die crack as seen during Variety 103b intermediate die state remains consistent while the opposite side of the reverse die has shattered.

The plate coin was sold as part of the Tim Cook collection during Heritage's 2005 CSNS Auction Sale and most likely was part of a substantial cud collection sold by rare coin dealer Larry Briggs to Tim Cook years earlier. I am not aware of this 1890 terminal die state being previously published or another specimen surfacing. As of April 2013, the rarity is estimated at R-7.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, ANACS G6
