1890-S

Variety 106

Obverse 4: Medium Date, Slight Downward Slope

Reverse E: Medium S, [mm C,C]

Obverse 4                                                Reverse E

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)                   Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Both Obverse 4 and Reverse E are in early die states with no evidence of die degradation. The Medium S mintmark on Reverse E is centered in both the horizontal and vertical directions.

Ahwash lists this obverse and reverse die pair as a Medium S over Small S variety in his encyclopedia. His macro photograph of the Medium S over Small S mintmark does not match the Medium S mintmark position found on the reverse of the plate coin. It has been strongly suggested by Seated dime variety collectors that the macro photograph of the Medium S over Small S mintmark is actually that of the 1891-S Medium S over Small S mintmark. As a result, I do not agree with attempts to reference Ahwash 3 as a Medium over Small S mintmark variety.
