1849-O
Variety 101b
Obverse 1: Medium Level Date
Reverse A.2: Large O, Oblique Punch, Shattered Reverse
Obverse 1 Reverse A.2
Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)
Comments: Obverse 1 is nearly always weakly struck. Reverse A is in a late die state and could be considered as shattered. A concentric die crack ring is present on the right wreath. See die crack mapping above. Ahwash indicates that the weakness in reverse dies and their strike quality was a function of the dies being left over from earlier years. This is not the case for Reverse A, as the Large O, Oblique punch is first seen in 1849.
Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, EF40
