Comments: A number of 1855 business strikes have been seen with the doubled date attributed to the proof dies. Die doubling is obvious on both the left and right arrows along with all four date digits. Additional die doubling is also seen on the shield lines and on Stars 11 and 12. The doubling of the date and arrows is the result of rotation of the working die during its second hubbing from the hub die. Were the proof dies re-used for a limited amount of business strikes? The availability of both mint state and circulated 1855 Seated dimes with doubled dates and arrows clearly confirms this fact.
