Reverse A: Proof Die

Obverse 1                                               Reverse A

Comments: The date digits show strong hub doubling on the right side of each digit. The hub doubling is the primary diagnostic for 1855 proof dies. Estimates of the number of surviving proof examples range from 12 to 15.

The proof dies were also used to mint business strike examples. See Variety 101a for an example of a high grade business strike from the proof dies.
