Obverse 4                                                 Reverse D

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: 1868 proof dimes exhibit a high date that slopes downward. The date punch was weakly placed into the obverse die. The S in STATES is complete. Obverse 4 has numerous random die lines across Liberty's upper body and lower gown area.

The normal (Variety 104) vs. the blundered (Variety 105) 1868 proof obverse can be easily diagnosed by looking at the date slope. An 1868 proof dime with weak date sloping downward is the normal proof obverse while a high level date indicates the blundered obverse. See Variety 105 descriptions.
