Scarcity: A difficult date to locate in the lower circulated grades and scarcer than its mintage would imply. This date is very scarce in EF-AU and becomes extremely scarce in Mint State. Mint State examples are some what undervalued at current pricing levels. Short Flag 1 style date punch examples are very undervalued if found in AU or Mint State grades. Comments: Two different date punches styles were used for 1869 dies resulting in Short and Long Flag 1 date varieties. The Short Flag 1 varieties are difficult to locate in higher grades and challenging to find well struck. Variety 101 is rare in EF or better. Nearly all AU or better examples seen of the 1869 date have been the Long Flag 1 variety. I would consider the Short Flag 1 variety to be R5+ in original AU and R7 in Mint State. As in 1868, a significant number of dies were produced for a meager mintage of 256,600 pieces. The low average mintage per die could be an explanation for the lack of late die state or cracked die examples. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
