Obverse 6                                                 Reverse F

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The date punch on Obverse 6 is positioned slightly lower than on the Obverse 5. Ahwash indicates that business strikes and proofs were made from the Obverse 6 and Reverse F die pair.

Long Flag 1 proof examples from both Obverse 5 and Obverse 6 make up the majority of 1869 proof dimes. A recent review of the Heritage Auction Archives revealed that 70% of the listed 1869 proof dimes were struck with Obverse 5 while only 12% were struck with Obverse 6. The 18% balance of 1869 proof dimes were struck with the Short Flag 1 date punch found on Obverse 4. Therefore, proof examples struck with Obverse 6 could be considered the most difficult proof variety for 1869 coinage.
