Comments: The 1888 date presents a host of varieties for the Seated dime specialist. Three proof dies have been identified along with four significant misplaced dates. In addition, two repunched dates and a polished reverse die with multiple die pairings are available. 1888 dimes are typically found with a soft strike on Liberty's head, and weakness in the base above the final two 8 digits in the date. With a mintage ranking in the top twenty dates for the Liberty Seated dime series, additional varieties will most certainly be identified. Finally, the rarity estimate are based on limited examination of 1888 specimens at large coins shows given the significant amount of die varieties. Incremental studies will be needed to determine a more accurate rarity assessment. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
