1839-O
Variety 108a
Obverse 5.2: Very Weak Stars 1 and 3, Die Crack Rim to Star 1
Reverse F.2: Late Die State Huge O, Die Crack ST(ATES) to Rim

Obverse 5 Reverse F.2
Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The plate coin is the highest grade and latest die state example seen for both Obverse 5 and Reverse F. On the obverse, a die crack connects the rim with Star 1. Another die crack joins Stars 4 and 5. Stars 1 through 3 are extremely weak during this die state. Reverse F has a stronger die crack from rim to (U)NITED, which initially appears on Huge O specimens. Further reverse die degradation has also produced a die crack through ST(ATES) to rim. The reverse die erosion is significant on the plate coin and is visible behind ON(E) and DI(ME).
Obverse 5 will be paired with one additional reverse die before being retired. The final pairing is with another Small O reverse (Reverse G) that quickly cracks and is reused to strike coinage during 1840.
Once again, current CoinValues pricing for the 1839-O Huge O varieties F-108 or F-108a is understated at this time.
