Comments: On Obverse 17, the date punch is positioned high and has a strong downward slope. There are two horizontal lines protruding from the base directly above the 18 digits that could be traces of a misplaced date punch.

Reverse P has a Medium S mintmark that is positioned well right and high and is the second 1887-S reverse die that shows a mintmark positioned right. The mintmark is repunched with remnants of earlier mintmark punch being obvious to the left of the final Medium S. On Reverse P, the mintmark is located the furthest right for known reverse dies; use this fact as an additional diagnostic to locate this interesting variety.
