Small Date

Variety 102

Obverse 2: Medium Date, Slight Downward Slope, Closed 5

Reverse B: Perfect Die

Obverse 2                                                Reverse B

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Detailed review of Obverse 2 revealed no signs of die doubling. There is a die defect to the left of the pendant on Liberty's gown. This die defect is an important diagnostic point in conjunction with the date position. The 5 digit is closed.

Reverse B is perfect but note the weak legend and devices. As other 1856 Small Date dies were lapped, then did the Philadelphia mint also lap this reverse die?

This die pairing is fairly easy to locate in circulated and mint state grades.
