Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: The date on Obverse 6 was well punched and is slightly larger than other 1856 Small Date dies. There are faint die scratches in the right armpit and upper arm that can be seen on higher grade examples. The date positions on Obverse 6 and Obverse 19 are quite similar but the date punch depth is deeper and broader on Obverse 6. Use the die scratches if possible to confirm the Obverse 6 die also. There are no signs of obverse die doubling on Obverse 6. The 5 digit is closed.

On several occasions, I have seen inexperienced dealers label dimes from this obverse die as Large Dates due to the strength of the date punch.
