Comments: The identification of 1876 San Francisco dies is an ongoing process that will continue for years. Variety 124 was identified within a lot of new Gerry Fortin Rare Coin purchases during October 2017. The presence of a huge die blog defect on Liberty's lower leg was quite evident during routine inspection. A review of existing 1876-S Type 1 reverse die variety listings failed to bring about a match. Therefore this new die pairing is listed as Variety 124 and is easily attribution by date placement and a huge die defect.

Attributing 1876 San Francisco reverse dies is challenging. On Reverse V, A small block S mintmark is positioned left and nicely centered. The mintmark tilts left by 3 degrees. The I in DIME is also doubled with an extra right base segment protruding from the final hubbed letter in the denomination. Overall hubbing of Reverse V is marginal with weak devices on the left and right wreath. Center devices are properly hubbed.
