Comments: Kam Ahwash identified two alternate date punch styles for 1876. The minor differences were labeled as Small Knob 6 and Large Knob 6 by Ahwash. A close study of both date punch styles revealed other minor differences, including the shape of the contour on top of the flag of the 7 digit and the size of the opening in the lower loop of the 6 digit. The spacing between digits on the Large Knob 6 date style is narrower than on the Small Knob 6 style. A photographic comparison of the two date punch styles is available here. Also in 1876, two different reverse hub styles appeared. The two different hub reverse styles were entitled Type I and Type II by Kam Ahwash. The different reverse hubs were used by all mints from 1876 through 1878, except for the 1877 coinage produced at the San Francisco mint. Only the Type II reverse hub has been found to date for 1877-S dimes. There have been rumors of usage of a 1877-S Type I reverse, with Breen listing this variety as #3403 in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins. However neither Ahwash, Greer, Breen and now Fortin have seen an example. The Type I reverse hub can be identified by a double point left ribbon end and the "E" in ONE almost touching the wheat grains. For Type II, using the same identifiers, the left ribbon end is long and single pointed while the "E" in ONE is distant from the wheat grains. A photographic comparison of the two different reverse hub styles may be found here. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
