Comments: All Type I reverses seen to date show die doubling on the denomination while die doubling is a
rare occurrence on Type II reverse dies. Secondly, it can be inferred from the study of Type I and Type II
reverses that separate craftsmen prepared each different reverse type. There is a significant difference
in the mintmark slopes between Type I and Type II reverses. On Type I reverse dies, the Small CC mintmarks
are typically positioned in a horizontal manner or with an upward slope (tilt left). For Type II reverse
dies, the Small CC mintmarks are typically found with either a downward slope (tilt right) or positioned
in a horizontal manner.

It is clear from this analysis that the Carson City mint employed multiple pairings of obverse and reverse
dies to mint its production demand in 1877. This study is far from complete and just begins to define the
scope of the effort necessary to determine a complete set of obverse and reverse dies and their pairings. I
have focused more heavily on identifying the Type I reverse dies and have nearly ignored the Type II reverse
dies during the years of study. Please keep this fact in mind when reviewing the research results. Do not
assume that there is a nearly equal amount of Type I and Type II reverse dies. I expected that additional
identification of Type II reverse dies will occur once collectors search this reverse type for varieties.
Obverse die pairings between Type I and Type II reverse dies have not been analyzed. I wish the next Seated
dime specialist good luck with this effort.
