Type I Reverse - Variety 107b

Obverse 5.3: Late Die State, Doubled Obverse Die, Medium Level Date, Large Knob 6

Reverse F.2: Late Die State, Small CC, [mm Lt,C,TL4], Greer Reverse B

Obverse 5.3                                           Reverse F.2

Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Both Obverse 5 and Reverse F are severely eroded in this late die state. The die doubling on OF AMERICA is weak as are many element details on Liberty or the shield. Note the advanced die crack through Liberty's head and the beginning of an internal cud on the hairline.

On Reverse F, the same situation is noted. There is massive die erosion around ONE DIME and no wreath details. I have seen a fair number of examples in this die state. Grading this variety in such a late die state is difficult due to the lack of design details on high grade specimens.

Beware that the major grading services may return submissions of this die state as environment damage. Collectors should be proactive and confirm with PCGS or NGC that they will certify this die state before making a submission.
