Comments: Kam Ahwash identified two alternate date punch styles for 1876. The minor differences were labeled as Small Knob 6 (SK6) and Large Knob 6 (LK6) by Ahwash. A close study of both date punch styles revealed other minor differences, including the shape of the contour on top of the flag of the 7 digit and the size of the opening in the lower loop of the 6 digit. The spacing between digits on the Large Knob 6 date style is narrower than on the Small Knob 6 style. A photographic comparison of the two date punch styles is available here. Type I Reverse: With a mintage of 8+ million, one could expect to find at least 35-40 die pairs. Research by various authors has revealed a significant variability in die quality. Carson City die storage techniques, or lack thereof, leads to many dies showing rust damage. Sharp strikes, even from rusted dies, are easy to find. The Doubled Die Obverse is the most popular of the 1876-CC Type I Reverse varieties. Paired with three different reverse dies, this variety is sought after by Seated dime specialists. A separate Coin World Trends/CoinValues valuation has been in existence for this variety. Current pricings are G4 ($15), VG8 ($30), F12 ($50), VF20 ($85), EF40 ($225), AU50 ($315) and MS60 ($475). Doubling of the denomination ONE DIME is common on Type I Reverse dies. Some dies show stronger doubling (Variety 108 and 108a) while others may show doubling on the E's in ONE DIME or on the D in DIME. My rarity estimates are questionable at best. There are simply too many die pairs to remember and to define individual rarity estimates. Research of this date and mintmark needs to continue as I do expect additional die pairings to be located by knowledgeable dealers and collectors. Locating early die states of the rusted obverse dies will be a significant challenge; that is if early die states do exist. These dies may have rusted prior to their initial usage in 1876. Type II Reverse: 1876-CC Type II Reverse examples are limited to a single die pair. This variety is scarce in all grades. High grade AU and Mint State examples will be found with prooflike surfaces and strong strikes. Bill Fivaz has noted traces of repunching at the bottom of the 6 digit in the date. Type II Reverse examples should bring a strong premium over Coin World Trends/CoinValues. From prior experience of transactions, a current valuation could be G4 ($35), VG8 ($55), F12 ($80), VF20 ($150), EF40 ($300), AU50 ($600) and MS60 ($1000).
