1876-CC

Type I Reverse - Variety 131a

Obverse 24.2: Late Die State, Pimple Rusted Die, High Level Date, Small Knob 6

Reverse W.2: Late Die State, Severely Rusted Die, Small CC, [mm C,C,TR2]

Obverse 24.2                                            Reverse W.2

Comments: Regardless of the rusted and pimpled condition of the Obverse 24 and Reverse W dies, the above plate coin demonstrates that these dies were used to strike more coinage. Both obverse and reverse dies are well worn with significant denticle erosion, most notable on the obverse where the tops of (OF AME)RICA are merging into space between letters and denticles.

Grading 1876-CC dimes with severe die erosion is always a challenge due to loss of device high points as a result of striking conditions rather than wear. I believe the plate coin grades at least AU50.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, AU50 or better
